Bridging Generations: The Revival of Kōnane"
On my way to work, I tuned into NPR and found myself captivated by Uncle John Kaohelaulii’s heartfelt story of Kōnane—a game that embodies the wisdom and resilience of Hawaiian culture. Known as an ancient Hawaiian board game, Kōnane is often likened to a portal to the past, offering a window into the ingenuity and values of our kūpuna (ancestors). Traditionally played on the papamū, a stone board carved with grids, the game uses black rocks (ʻili ʻili) and white coral as playing pieces.
Historically cherished by both aliʻi (royalty) and commoners, Kōnane was a beloved pastime woven into the fabric of Hawaiian life. Yet, like so many cultural practices, it faced suppression during the missionary era, nearly fading into obscurity. Today, thanks to the dedication of cultural practitioners like Uncle John, Kōnane is experiencing a renaissance. Modern boards, often crafted from wood, ensure that this treasure is more accessible, bridging the gap between past and present.
Inspired by Kōnane’s enduring legacy, I created an editorial scene that captures its revival: two young women engaged in a game, their focus reflecting the core values the game imparts. The deliberate pace of their moves speaks to ahonui(patience), their respectful interaction embodies haʻahaʻa (humility), and their curiosity highlights ʻike loa (a love of learning). This moment illustrates how Kōnane serves as more than just a game—it’s a living testament to Hawaiian wisdom and community spirit.
Today, Kōnane is finding its way into classrooms, homes, and cultural gatherings worldwide, fostering critical thinking and meaningful connections. It has become a bridge between generations, an opportunity to reflect on the past while engaging with the present.
